Trading up in this year’s NHL draft served as a side note to the Lightning’s big news of dealing defenseman Mikhail Sergachev on Saturday. But the team still left Las Vegas with seven draft picks, two more than they arrived with.
The Lightning didn’t have a selection in any of the first three rounds — given away as part of deals for Brandon Hagel, Tanner Jeannot and Anthony Duclair at each of the past three trade deadlines — but they dealt Jeannot on Saturday and received an additional fourth-rounder.
With their first pick (118th overall), the Lightning took 6-foot-6, 17-year-old Slovenian defenseman Jan Golicic. Their other fourth-rounder (128th overall) was 18-year-old right wing Hagen Burrows, this season’s Minnesota Mr. Hockey (awarded to the top high school hockey player in Minnesota).
Golicic brings the Lightning a defenseman prospect with tremendous size. He is listed at 188 pounds, but at his age has plenty of room to grow. Scouting reports note that he is a lockdown defenseman with outstanding reach. His length gives him a long stick to break up plays and play well on the forecheck, much like Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman.
He just finished his first season of North American major junior hockey, recording three goals and 26 assists in 65 games with Gatineau of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. Golicic also represented Slovenia in this year’s under-18 World Juniors, posting four goals and six assists in five games.
Burrows was a 19-goal, 40-assist scorer as a senior for Minnetonka High School, and he also played 25 games for Sioux City of the United States Hockey League, scoring nine goals with 13 assists. It’s the second straight draft in which the Lightning selected a reigning Minnesota Mr. Hockey, taking center Jayson Shaugabay last season. Burrows is committed to play college hockey at the University of Denver.
The Lightning also made two European selections, taking center Joona Saarelainen out of Finland in the fifth round and Norwegian winger Noah Steen in the seventh round. They claimed a goaltender with their final pick at 206th overall, selecting 19-year-old Harrison Meneghin, who posted a 2.59 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in his second full season in the Western Hockey League with Lethbridge.
