TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning secured a key piece of their future today, signing defenseman Victor Hedman to a four-year contract extension with an average annual value of $8 million. The deal kicks in for the 2025-26 season and runs through 2028-29.

The 33-year-old Hedman is a force on both ends of the ice. In the 2023-24 season, he notched an impressive 63 assists and 76 points, ranking high among all NHL defensemen. His contributions were especially valuable on the power play, where he racked up 31 points.

Hedman’s impact goes beyond his scoring prowess. He led the Lightning in average ice time for the season and playoffs, demonstrating his commitment and stamina. His leadership was on display during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he paced the team in ice time and points despite the team’s defeat to the eventual champions, the Florida Panthers.

A veteran of 1,052 NHL games, all with Tampa Bay, Hedman boasts an impressive resume. He ranks among the top active defensemen in points, power-play points, plus/minus rating, and games played.

Hedman’s playoff record is equally remarkable. He holds the Lightning franchise record for most postseason points and assists among defensemen. Across the entire NHL, he ranks highly in both categories for active players.

He also holds numerous Lightning franchise records for defensemen, solidifying his place as a team legend.

This extension ensures Hedman will continue to be a cornerstone of the Lightning defense for years to come. With his talent, leadership, and experience, the Lightning are well-positioned to contend for championships for seasons to come.
