Video shows plane tire exploding on takeoff at Tampa International Airport

A flight headed to Phoenix was delayed Wednesday morning after a tire on the plane exploded during takeoff at Tampa International Airport, video shows.

Video posted on YouTube by the user Captain Steven Markovich shows an American Airlines plane taxiing on the runway when its right tire catches fire and smoke fills the air. Video shows the tires sparking and fragments of tires left on the runway.

“A blown tire,” Markovich yells in the video. “Emergency, emergency, emergency. They’re on fire,” he says.

Voices over the radio can be heard saying “Abort,” and “We’ve got a blown tire.”

First responders were called to American Airlines Flight 590 at Taxiway W just before 8 a.m., Joshua Gillin, a spokesperson with the airport, said in an email.

The aircraft’s passengers and crew exited the plane and were taken to Airside F, and other flight operations were not affected, Gillin said.

No injuries were reported, according to American Airlines spokesperson Ethan Klapper, who said 174 passengers and six crew members were on board.

Klapper said the plane, a Boeing 737-800, experienced a mechanical issue related to the tire before takeoff. Passengers were accommodated on a replacement flight to Phoenix.

“Customers safely deplaned and were bussed to the terminal,” Klapper said in an email. “We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
