TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is warning locals of unsafe water conditions at multiple beaches as well as Lake Thonotosassa.

The DOH-Hillsborough released an alert regarding the water quality for multiple beaches. The following beaches currently do not meet the water quality criteria for Enterococcus bacteria:

    • Bahia Beach (2513 W Shell Point Road, Ruskin)
    • Ben T Davis Beach (7740 W Courtney Campbell Causeway, Tampa)
    • Picnic Island Beach (7404 Picnic Island Blvd., Tampa)

The level of bacteria exceeded the level established by state guidelines for safe swimming conditions. This advisory will continue until bacteria levels are below the accepted health criteria.

Bacteria test results are available at: FloridaHealth.gov/HealthyBeaches

Due to the presence of harmful blue-green algae in Lake Thonotosassa, the DOH-Hillsborough also advised residents and visitors to avoid any contact with the affected water. Wash your skin and clothing with soap if you do encounter the water and keep pets and livestock away from the area.

Blue-green algae are a type of bacteria that is common in Florida’s freshwater environment. Warm water temperatures, still water conditions and excess nutrients can contribute to the source of an algae bloom. Many blue-green algae can produce toxins that is considered dangerous for humans. You can recognize the appearance of the algae as scum, foam, or paint on the surface of the water and can often emit unpleasant odors.
