Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp 2024 Preview
The Bucs won a ghastly NFC South last year and barely edged out the New Orleans Saints for the spot. We all know the Panthers won’t win the NFC South but the Falcons and the Saints will definitely be running for the spot this year. The Falcons went and got Kirk Cousins and drafted Michael Penix Jr., so they will have a somewhat capable QB for a interesting Falcons team. The Saints have Derek Carr, who has proved he can play in spurts but never on a consistent basis, if the Saints choose to bench him and go with Spencer Rattler, they might have a gunslinger to help them win the division. Either way, both teams got better and Carr should be more comfortable with the Saints offense. Meanwhile, the Bucs lost promising play caller Dave Canales to the Panthers. I wonder how much that affects their offense prowess. It all starts in camp though, here is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp preview.
Three Position Battles To Watch
RB: Rachaad White vs. Bucky Irving vs. Chase Edmonds vs. Sean Tucker
In our first position battle in this Buccaneers training camp preview, we look at the RB position. I simply put Sean Tucker here as a formality, I would be very surprised if he emerges higher than a RB3, and I think that is generous. While this RB group wasn’t the best, Bucky Irving was one of the best in the class for me. Garrett called White being a fantasy league winner last year, but how does that change with Irving in the mix. Could Chase Edmonds see more of the field or less this year? I do think Rachaad White is the guy for the Bucs this year, but his workload could see significantly less if these guys produce.
WR3: Trey Palmer vs. Jalen McMillan vs. Rakim Jarrett
As Trey Palmer was the WR3 last year, you would have to expect he would start out the year as the same. However, I think Rakim Jarrett is talented, if he gets more looks, he could pressure Palmer for the spot. McMillan was a 3rd round pick, he surely could be in the mix. He does have some speed on him and could blow the top off defenses and has experience playing in the slot with Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk on the outside at Washington. He could find himself in a better role with now Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on the outside.
EDGE: Chris Braswell vs. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
The 2nd round pick in Chris Braswell will challenge the former first rounder Joe Tryon-Shoyinka for the starting spot for strongside linebacker. At Alabama, Chris Braswell was a contributor on the stat sheet for sacks. Getting 8 this last year which is tied for 34th in the country. Tryon-Shoyinka has been getting better every year he has been in, but with this year being his 4th year of his contract and the Bucs may not extend the 5th-year option, he could see his spot in jeopardy. Shoyinka has been solid, but if Braswell impresses, they might look at him for the spot and give Shoyinka the boot.
Ready To Breakout: Trey Palmer
Trey Palmer sufficed as the WR3 for the Bucs last year. He does need to catch more of his targets, only bringing in 57% of his targets. If he could clean that up, he could see his numbers jump. There is ability to make plays after the catch, but it all starts with bringing in more of his targets.
Rookie To Watch: Jalen McMillan
As I talk about Trey Palmer, the spot could be in jeopardy with Jalen McMillan, I wouldn’t stick out my neck for McMillan and say the dude can play, but I think, like Palmer, he will suffice. As mentioned, he will challenge that WR3 spot and could play in the slot for the Bucs, having experience at that. I think Palmer’s problem is consistency, if McMillan can prove that, he could be productive for the Bucs.
Fantasy Sleeper: Trey Palmer
I’m still going to hold Trey Palmer for the sleeper spot. As mentioned, if he can bring in some of his targets at a higher rate, his numbers will jump. He won’t win you a league, but he might win you a few games out of the season. If you haven’t noticed, I like me some returners in Fantasy (granted your league is smart and has return points). Guess what Trey Palmer does? That’s right, he’s a returner, that might snag you a few extra points or if he can score a returning TD here and there, we’re cooking with peanut oil.
49ers are back in it to win the Super Bowl. Brock Purdy, as awesome as his fans say he is, hasn’t won it yet. Despite having a very good team around him that is seemingly always overlooked and all the credit is given to Purdy when they win the team isn’t good enough when they lose, they’ll have another shot at the Super Bowl. Let’s see if Purdy can get it done with a really good team again.
