4-star Tampa-area athlete to take Hurricanes visit this weekend for second time in 2024: “There’s nothing really like Miami”

Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day four-star cornerback DJ Williams has already visited Miami once this year, and the 6-foot-1, 160-pound prospect wanted to take one final chance to connect with Hurricanes’ secondary coach Chevis Jackson in person this summer before the start of the fall season.

Williams, who is listed as a receiver in the On3 Industry Ranking but is being recruited as a cornerback at Miami, will return to Coral Gables this weekend for the first time since the Hurricanes’ spring game April 13, he told CaneSport . The No. 56 prospect in the state of Florida has already landed 20 offers from programs ranging from Notre Dame and Oklahoma to UMass and Western Kentucky, and he said he’s developed a good relationship with Jackson so far this year.

“Already he’s done a great job of trying to get to know me and reaching out,” Williams said. “He’s done a very good job of that so far. So even just seeing him reach out and take time out of his day to contact me and be there for me, it means a lot. So I want to pay back the respect by giving the time of day and talking to him.”

Williams called Jackson “a great person who is fun to be around” and said he feels he can “really learn from him.” He said having a coach like Jackson who can consistently engage and connect with his players makes for a more fun environment, and he wants to continue to build his relationship this weekend. Louisville, USF, Oklahoma and North Carolina have also made strong impressions since coaches became permitted to directly call and text 2026 recruits earlier this summer. He visited Georgia, Notre Dame and Florida this spring as well.

Miami has still found ways to consistently capture his attention.

“It’s close to home,” Williams said. “And just the school and the prestigious environment it has (helps Miami stand out). There’s nothing really like Miami.”

Williams said distance from home won’t play a big factor in his eventual decision, although if he has the option he would like to “stay kind of close” to home in order for his parents to regularly attend games.

He said he would like to attend fall games at schools like Miami, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Texas A&M but hasn’t put too much thought into his recruiting schedule for the coming months. He said he isn’t yet sure which games his parents will or won’t be able to attend.

    CaneSport’s Take

Miami wasn’t able to move the needle too much on Williams’ last visit for the spring game, but Jackson has done a good job getting Williams enthused about this return trip. The Hurricanes will look to capture some early momentum for Williams this weekend.
