Lightning Should Have Reunited With Pat Maroon

The Tampa Bay Lightning brought back an old friend earlier this offseason when they acquired defenseman Ryan McDonagh from the Nashville Predators. The veteran defenseman is once again expected to be a crucial part of their blueline as they look to make a real run in 2024-25.

However, when looking at this year’s free agency class, they also may have benefitted by bringing back another former Bolt – Pat Maroon.

Maroon, 36, hit the free-agent market on July 1 after the Boston Bruins elected not to re-sign him. However, he quickly found a new home, signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. He is now expected to be a key leader in their room as they continue their rebuild.

While the Lightning have made some additions to their bottom six this offseason, it would not have hurt for them to bring back Maroon, either. There is no question that the Lightning's bottom six would have benefitted by having his toughness back in it, especially after trading Tanner Jeannot. In addition, his excellent leadership and immense experience could have made the three-time Stanley Cup champ a solid player to bring back.

Although the Lightning did not sign Maroon in free agency, there is always a chance in the future that they could look to bring him back. With the Blackhawks rebuilding and Maroon only signing for one year, he could be made available if Chicago is out of the playoff race nearing the deadline.
