Southbound Turnpike traffic blocked at Admire interchange after wreck near Emporia service exit
Law enforcement authorities are investigating after a reported injury crash northeast of Emporia on Saturday afternoon. The wreck was reported around 3:15 pm at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 134 southbound, or seven miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate and two miles northeast of the Emporia service exit. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, Emporia/Lyon County EMS and a medical helicopter responded.
Grace United Methodist Church hosts successful Kicks 4 Kids shoe giveaway
Grace United Methodist Church held its annual Kicks 4 Kids shoe giveaway Saturday, bringing much-needed footwear and other essential services to local children. "About seven years ago, a youth group of junior high and high school students recognized a need in their schools," said organizer Russ Conrade. "Some kids couldn't participate in gym or PE because they didn't have the proper shoes, or any decent shoes at all. It started as a way to help them and has just grown from there. It’s an opportunity to reach out and share a little bit of God's love with those around us."
Brigade win game one of the Cowdin Cup championship series
The Junction City brigade defeated the Topeka Warhawks 8-6 in the opening game of the Cowdin Cup championship series Friday night at Rathert Field in Junction City. Game two of the best two out of three series will be Saturday night in Topeka. If there is a game three it will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Rathert Field.

Renovated Sams Chapel Reopening This Fall
One of the most notable buildings on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University will reopen this fall, refurbished and remodeled. According to KWU, a fully renovated Sams Chapel will reopen Saturday, Oct. 19, as part of Homecoming 2024. The new performance space will be christened with a special concert, titled ‘Come Home,’ which will get underway at 7 p.m. and feature celebrated musical guests from KWU’s recent past. In late 2023 the men at War Horses for Veterans got a call—Trevor Brazile and Miles Baker had a Relentless Remuda horse that might fit their program. “Ty Smith with Solo Select heard that Trevor Brazile was looking to donate a horse and wanted to know the right place for it to go,” said medically retired Marine Sgt. Jake Greenlief, who is the War Horses for Veterans Ranch Manager and Director of Equine Management.
City receives grants to add murals to community
There has been talk among the community for a long time regarding the desire for more public art and soon, that will be one step closer to becoming reality. Last week, Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced $1,295,450 was awarded to 108 recipients in the latest round of Kansas Arts Commission (KAC) grant funding. The funds will support museums, arts education, music, dance, visual arts, professional and community theater, creative writing, murals, poetry and other creative projects. Grants were awarded in 42 counties, with funding going to counties in rural locations, including Seward County and the City of Liberal. Public Affairs Director Keeley Moree said the news of the grant is very exciting after so many discussions.
