After more than a year sitting vacant, International District Walmart may get new owner
The Walmart in Albuquerque’s International District has been closed for more than 16 months — but the 206,000-square-foot building may not remain vacant much longer. On July 5, a commercial real estate website updated the listing of the former Walmart on San Mateo Boulevard near Central Avenue SE to “under contract.” The supercenter was built in 1994 and was added to the website on May 1, 2023.

Man arrested in connection to hit-and-run in Bloomfield
A Bloomfield man was charged with three felonies after allegedly chasing down another man and hitting him with his car. Jeremy Russell, 43, faces felony charges of third-degree aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, third-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident, causing great bodily harm and a fourth-degree aggravated assault.
Man enters plea in 2020 Shiprock carjacking
A Shiprock man entered a plea agreement in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque admitting to a 2020 assault and motor vehicle theft in Shiprock. Daryl Levi admitted in court that on May 17, 2020, he attacked a man, who was parked in his car at the Gulf Gas Station in Shiprock. The man “suffered bodily injury including bruises and contusions,” according to court documents.

NMAI to present best in Indigenous film at Native Cinema Showcase
SANTA FE, N.M. – The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aug. 15–18 for its Native Cinema Showcase. The museum’s 24th annual celebration of the best in Indigenous film includes 38 films this year. The showcase also provides a forum for engagement with Native filmmakers from Indigenous communities throughout the Western Hemisphere and Arctic. This year’s program begins with a panel discussion featuring Indigenous film luminaries Graham Greene (Oneida), Tantoo Cardinal (Cree/Métis/Nakota), Gary Farmer (Cayuga) and Wes Studi (Cherokee), moderated by Sierra Teller Ornelas (Navajo). NMSU graduate student preserves history of Black Programs through archival project
Graduate student Lauretta King began her journey at New Mexico State University in spring 2022 by getting a job in the Black Programs office as an administrative assistant. Seasonal Hours Announced for Outdoor Pools
Laabs Pool and the East Mesa Bataan Memorial Pool will begin seasonal operating hours the week of July 29, 2024. NMSU awarded $6 million NSF grant to address climate change, aging energy infrastructure
