Kristen Martines Named Principal Of Barranca Elementary School
Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) has announced that Kristen Martines has been selected as the new Principal at Barranca Mesa Elementary School. Martines is a former Los Alamos Middle School Hawk and Los Alamos High School Hilltopper. She graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading. She earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico Highlands University and then earned her administrative license.
Dancers flock to Las Cruces for Arts Lab Desert Peaks, plan public performance
For the fourth year since its inception, Arts Lab Desert Peaks is hosting dancers from around the U.S. in a two-week workshop in Las Cruces. Ice arena in Santa Fe closes due to mechanical issues
SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The ice arena at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe closed due to “mechanical issues,” the city announced Wednesday afternoon. Recreation Division Director Brian Stinett said the rink experienced issues with its compressors that keep the ice cool. “We were maintaining ice, and we were checking those temperatures throughout the evening to see if we were in danger of losing it. Per the contractor’s instruction, they asked us to leave compressor 1 running. We did, only to come in Tuesday morning to see a pool of water starting to form on the ice,” Stinett said.
Doña Ana Arts Council director stepping down
The Doña Ana Arts Council announced the departure of executive director Araceli Solis Wednesday in a news release inviting applications for an interim leader. Solis “will be transitioning from our organization to pursue personal professional endeavors,” the nonprofit stated in a news release. A former art teacher at Sierra Middle School and 20-year educator, Solis had held the position since February 2023, when she succeeded Greg Smith as executive director.

Gallery Shows Off Big-Name Art
Weems Gallery and Framing has been around for 45 years and keeps changing with the times. Owner Sheila McVeigh says she has two main goals for the gallery: To keep prices within a wide and affordable range and to give back to the local community. One of the ways she plans to achieve both of these goals is through the gallery’s August resale art show and reception with over 250 works by well-known, local artists from their private collections. It’s an opportunity for novice collectors to shop locally and hopefully get a bargain or even just to relax after work with a little glass of wine and see some artwork that they may never otherwise see.

Baseball Earns ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award
New Mexico Baseball has been awarded the 2023-24 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, the organization announced Wednesday. Teams from every level of college and high school baseball — over 800 in total — were honored with this year’s award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the cumulative 2023-24 academic year. The Lobo baseball program posted a 3.435 cumulative GPA over the 2023-2024 academic year to qualify.
