EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - On April 18-21, East Brunswick High School students enrolled in the International Studies course participated in the 2024 Model United Nations at Cornell University .  Over 40 students, led by their teacher, Ms. Ellen Spivey, participated in intense simulations of international events requiring diplomatic solutions and critical thinking.

"The Cornell Model United Nations Conference (CMUNC) is an annual high school model UN conference hosted by the Cornell International Affairs Society (CIAS) at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. CIAS was established to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of global socioeconomic and political issues amongst its members and the wider Cornell community. The organization aspires to achieve its purpose by training for, and attending, model United Nations conferences within the collegiate circuit, by planning and hosting CMUNC, and by hosting regular meetings to discuss current events of international importance, as well as by promoting and attending additional international relations events on campus," says the CMUNC website.

Throughout the weekend, students participated in vigorous debate, trying to solve modern crises such as "Climate Change Inequality," "The Use of AI Weapons in Warfare," and "The Impact of COVID-19 on the Refugee Crisis."

Some students even had the ability to travel back in time in order to try to create a better outcome in the 1919 Turkish War of Independence; handle the territorial disputes of the 1990 invasion of Kuwait; and even rewrite history in the Election of 1964.
