NEWTON, NJ – As the Town of Newton continues to expand their animal control services the need for a shelter became apparent.  Last week the ribbon was cut, signaling the opening of an animal shelter in Memory Park.

“The new animal impound facility in the Town of Newton represents a significant step forward in community and animal welfare. This facility not only strengthens our capability to care for lost and abandoned pets but also reflects our commitment to providing humane and efficient animal control services,” Newton Police Chief Steven VanNieuwland.

As chief VanNieuwland oversees the animal control operations.

Newton currently has shared served agreements with Branchville, Hardwick, Frankford, Stillwater and Sussex. The town is also in negotiations with several other municipalities to establish additional agreements for Animal Control Officer services, VanNieuwland said.

The Newton Department of Public Works, together with the Water and Sewer employees, completed construction renovations on a building that is now equipped to serve as a temporary impound facility for dogs and cats, according to the chief.

“It’s reassuring to know that animals in need have a safe place to stay until they can be reunited with their owners or find new homes through adoption. This initiative underscores Newton's dedication to both its residents, shared service partners and their animal companions,” VanNieuwland said.
