MAHOPAC, N.Y.— Senior Danny Koch had a hat-trick and an assist, and senior Liam Scanlon added two goals, but it wasn’t enough last Friday night on Senior Night at Mahopac High School, as the Wolf Pac dropped an 11-6 decision to the neighboring Carmel Rams.

Carmel jumped out early in the game and led 3-0 after one. Mahopac closed the gap to 3-2 by halftime, but couldn’t stop Carmel in the second half. It was the first time Carmel had ever beaten Mahopac in boys lacrosse.

“We played tough, especially in the first half,” coach Jon Bota said. “But we made too many mental mistakes, and they pulled away in the second half. Carmel definitely has a good team this year.”

Liam Jones had a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pac, Bryan Margolis had one goal, and Brayden Torrey and Patrick Mahoney each had an assist. Keeper Lucas Lambertson had seven saves in net.

Prior to the game, the school honored the team’s five outgoing seniors—team captains Koch, Scanlon, Danny Bosio and John Kearney, and attackman Quinn Kelleher.

“Those five have done a lot of great things,” Bota said. “Some of them have been here for all of my years, and it will be strange not to have them here next year. It’s a special class.”

The prior Tuesday at Yorktown, the Pac played well but dropped a 13-6 decision to the Cornhuskers.

Koch had two goals and an assist, Scanlon and Jones each scored twice, and Torrey and Mahoney each had an assist. Lambertson had nine saves in net for Mahopac (2-11).

“Yorktown is great on defense, and their offense is coming on,” Bota said of the Huskers. “We played well, stepped up. But we can also play down (to the competition) as well—when you’re not careful and disciplined - and that’s where we’ve gotten in some trouble. But we battled.

“Danny has continued to steady the storm as much as he can,” Bota added of the St. John’s-bound Koch. “He keeps trying to make plays, and work with the younger guys. He’s been tremendous this year. And our three defensemen - senior Danny Bosio, and juniors Landon Varley and Brady Donaghy - have really been coming on. Our close defense has been doing well.”

Mahopac needs a win in its final regular-season game, scheduled for Tuesday (May 14) at RCK at 5 p.m. vs. Wappingers, in order to qualify for the playoffs.

“They have some good players,” Bota said of Wappingers. “But I believe we can handle our business. It’s also our last league game, so it’s a good challenge for us. They’re definitely hungry for that one.”

Playoffs are set to open with first-round games on Saturday.
