    Cedar Grove Softball Drops Close Final Game In Essex County Tournament

    CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove Varsity Softball put up a strong fight against the 25-1 Mount St. Dominic Lady Lions in the Final Round of the Essex County Tournament, but ultimately fell 9-7.

    Cedar Grove took a 6-3 lead in the first two frames before a four-run bottom of the third put Mount St. Dominic ahead for good. Cedar Grove would score one more run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady Lions answered in the next half inning to put away a comeback rally.

    Multiple Panthers hitters finished with multiple hits in the contest including juniors Gia Fernandez,  Ava Oeckel, Cayce Kavakich, Daniella Dangelo and Marina Bryant. They combined for 11 of Cedar Grove’s 12 hits in the contest.

    Fernandez added three RBIs and a home run. Kavakich received the nod on the mound, allowing eight earned runs while walking eight and striking out ten.

    For the Lady Lions, seniors Naya Martinez, Gianna Stern and Olivia Bibbo recorded multiple hits. The three sluggers combined to drive in six of the team’s nine runs. Ava Kelshaw was credited with the win on the mound, allowing five earned runs, and striking out seven.

    Next up for Cedar Grove is the opening round of the NJSIAA Tournament at home against Bergen Charter. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
