    Tennis Recap: Phillipsburg Gets a Win Over Warren Hills, Looks to Bridgewater-Raritan

    hillipsburg High School won all three singles matches on the way to a 4-1 victory over Warren Hills in a Skyland Conference tennis match at the Phillipsburg Athletic Complex.

    PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Phillipsburg High School won all three singles matches on the way to a 4-1 victory over Warren Hills in a Skyland Conference tennis match at the Phillipsburg Athletic Complex.

    Senior Cam Johnson got the Stateliners off to a nice start when he defeated Franco Giovanetti 6-3, 6-2 at first singles.

    “Cam closed out a strong second half of the regular season,” Phillipsburg coach Donny Smith said. “He settled in nicely after the first couple of games in the first set and took control of his match. He attacked the net well and won a lot of points by moving his opponent around on the court.”

    At No. 2 singles, sophomore Jules Canlapan also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 over Derreck Despres.

    “Jules played his best match of the season today,” Smith said. “Once he settled in, he played with a lot of confidence, His serves were strong and he hit with excellent pace. This was a huge confidence builder for Jules as we move into the summer.”

    Senior Matt Simon won at third singles, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11), over Robert Dahmer in a tightly contested match decided by a tiebreaker.

    “Matt stepped up and won a very tough match,” Smith said. “He and his opponent were very evenly matched. Matt dug down and found what he needed to on his serve and with his net play, He was motivated to walk off the court with a win and he was able to accomplish that.”

    P’burg won second doubles by forfeit. The Blue Streaks duo of Mark Philip and Vinny Costa won first doubles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 over Luke Johnson and Lucas Lau in another tight match.

    Phillipsburg (2-15) is seeded 11 th in the upcoming NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 sectional playoffs and will play at No. 6 Bridgewater-Raritan (6-13) in a first-round game at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The winner plays at third-seed J.P Stevens on May 29 in the quarterfinal round.

    “The team is looking forward to getting on the court and giving Bridgewater-Raritan everything it has,” Smith said.
