    Records Fall, and Medals Taken Home as Bloomfield High Track Teams Excel

    It's been quite a season for the Bloomfield High track and field team.

    Head coach Terry Iavarone's squad has garnered a lot of hardware at various invitationals and meets.

    On May 31 and June 1, the Bengals are at the NJSIAA sectional championship meet, at Clifton High School. The May 31 festivities begin at 3 p.m. and continue on June 1, starting at 10 a.m. Those that qualify at the sectionals will move on to the Group 4 championship meet, on June 7 and June 8, at Franklin High School.

    Bloomfield's athletes have been very busy during late April and into May.

    April 20: At the Morris Hills Relays, the Bloomfield boys team finished fourth, as the 4x400 team took second, the 4x200 shuttle relay team was third, the 4x800 team and the 3x400 intermediate hurdles team took fourth and the long jump relay squad placed fifth.

    The girls finished sixth, with second place finishes by the 4x200, shuttle hurdles, discus and long-jump teams, as well as a sixth place finish from the 4x100 relay, triple jump and javelin relay.

    April 27: At the Millburn Relays, the girls took first in the shuttle hurdles, second in the 4x200, third in the sprint medley relay, 3x400 intermediate hurdles and high jump, fourth in the 4x800, triple jump and 4x400 relay and sixth in the pole vault and shot put.

    The boys took gold in the pole vault and sprint medley, second in the 4x200 and 4x400, third in the shuttle hurdles, fourth in the discus and 4x800, and fifth in the javelin and intermediate hurdles.

    May 1: The Bengals improved to 7-0 with wins over Orange and Newark West Side.

    Other highlights in early May included senior captain Angel Cruz-Fletcher breaking the school record in the long jump, by clearing 18'2", and Charles Lisa breaking his own school record in the pole vault by jumping 12'6".

    The Bengals, boys and girls, each finished 8-0 in meets, marking the third straight year the Bengals finished the meet season undefeated.
