Top Seeded Chargers Take Down Rumson-Fair Haven in First Round of NJSIAA Tournament

SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The top seeded Spotswood High School varsity softball team rolled to a 9-0 victory over 16 ^th seeded Rumson-Fair Haven High School on Wednesday in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group Two Tournament. Ava Mormile threw six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 13 to pick up the win on the mound. Mikayla Ott pitched the final inning, striking out two to earn the save. Spotswood moves on to the quarterfinals to face eighth-seeded Bordentown High School. Bordentown defeated ninth-seeded Metuchen High School 11-3 in their first round game.

Mormile also delivered at the plate for Spotswood, hitting a double and a single. The junior also had an RBI and scored a run for Spotswood. Gabrielle Hill hit a single for the Chargers. Hill also had a stolen base and scored one of the Chargers runs. Isabella Vitale had a single and scored two runs. Hanna Brown had an RBI. Lily Cunningham scored a run. Sasha Soffer scored two of Spotswood's runs. Juliana Ziegler hit two singles, drove in a run and scored a run for the Chargers. Molly Walsh scored one of the Chargers runs and had a stolen base. Victoria Ziegler had a single and two RBIs.

Lilee Martinelle took the loss on the mound for Rumson-Fair Haven. Martinelle pitched six innings, giving up nine runs on seven hits and striking out two. Thea Azaceta and Julia Funck had the lone hits for Rumson-Fair Haven.

Spotswood's victory improved the team's overall season record to 19-8. The Chargers host Bordentown on Tuesday at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field. Bordentown has an overall season record of 12-11. A game time for Tuesday's quarterfinal match up has not been announced yet.
