    Baseball: Carteret Advances Past South River, 5-4, in 9 Innings in State Tournament

    CARTERET, NJ -- Luis Hernandez pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout relief and Carteret scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 5-4 baseball victory over South River in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 2 tournament on Wednesday.

    South River (12-12) scored four runs in the top of the first, but Hernandez came in and allowed just two hits the rest of the way, striking out nine and walking two to get the win.

    Justin Santana went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, Lucas Rivera was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Hernandez and Joniel Martinez each had a hit and two RBI for Carteret (18-7). Hernandez' hit was a triple.

    Carteret, the fourth seed, will host the winner of the A.L. Johnson-Bordentown game in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
