NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP - Earlier this week it was reported by several news outlets that flags placed on roughly 20 graves in Mount Prospect Cemetary had been the subject of vandalism by unknown parties, however, this is determined to not be the case.  The flags were placed there by veterans organizations such as American Legion Post #346 and were meant to honor the veterans buried in Mount Prospect for their service.

The penalty for a stolen flag can be as high as $1000 per flag, however, it looks like no one will be fined for these flags being ripped off their posts - according to an ongoing investigation by the Neptune Township Police, "through investigation and a source from another jurisdiction who saw this on (a news channel); it is our belief the flags were damaged by some type of animal, possibly squirrels. Apparently, this has occurred in other jurisdictions. We have no reason to believe or any evidence that this was caused by a person at this time," shared NTPD Chief Anthony Gualario.
