    Baseball: Steinert Edges Matawan, 2-1, in 8 Innings in State Tournament

    MATAWAN, NJ -- Steinert scored a run in the top of the eighth inning and held on for a 2-1 baseball victory over Matawan in the first round of the Central Jersey, Group 3 state tournament on Thursday.

    Alex Wolak and Jace Maher each drove in runs for Steinert (14-12), which scored its runs in the second and eighth innings.

    Mason Grant was the winning pitcher, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing four hits, one run and no walks and striking out four before reaching 110 pitches. Joe Loreti came on to get the last out and the save for Steinert.

    Steinert, the ninth seed, will play at top-seeded Lawrence in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
