    Baseball: Sayreville Wins First Round of Sectionals Over Hightstown, 4-3

    Sayreville War Memorial baseball won their first round sectional game against Hightstown on Thursday, May 23.

    SAYREVILLE, NJ - No. 8 seed Sayreville War Memorial baseball defeated No. 9 seed Hightstown 4-3 in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 Tournament on Thursday, May 23.

    The Bombers held a one-run lead for the first four innings before the Rams opened the top of the fifth with three runs. Sayreville responded with three runs themselves, and held that 4-3 lead for the remainder of the game.

    Junior Thomas Schlaline started the game on the mound, earning four strikeouts and allowing one run through the first four innings. Senior Moe Hedderman would then come in relief of Schlaline, earning four strikeouts himself while allowing no runs through two innings pitched.

    Sayreville's offense saw four players earn hits on Thursday, led by senior Jake Romanello, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Other hits for Sayreville came from Chase Cannan, Thomas Schlaline, and Michael Robinson.

    Sayreville will now advance to the sectional quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 29, where they will play No. 1 seed Old Bridge.
