Nutley High Softball, Baseball, Tennis, Volleyball, Track Teams Compete in State Tournament

The Nutley High softball team rallied with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh but eventually bowed to ninth-seeded Summit, 4-3, in eight innings in the opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 tournament on Wednesday, May 22 at Yantacaw Park in Nutley.
Makenna DeJianne was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Gianna Haines went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Lady Raiders erased a 3-0 deficit its late-innings rally.
Quennie Chavez was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run and Skye Stoeckel, Camryn Ortega each singled and scored and Gabriella Mariano also singled to pace the 10-hit attack.
Nutley finished 14-12 this season, which also saw head coach Luann Zullo win her 500th career game back on May 8.

Nutley, seeded 14th, performed admirably against one of the section's best, but came up short in a 3-0 loss to third-seeded North Hunterdon in the opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 tournament on
Nutley pitcher Drew Slomkowski went the distance, striking out four and limiting North Hunterdon to just four hits and four walks.
Unfortunately, the Raiders managed just three singles - by Eugenio Roman, Jonathon Breihoff and Dominic Saladino - against North Hunterdon pitching in finishing its season at 5-19. North Hunterdon (19-5) advanced to next week's sectional quarterfinal round.
Boys Tennis
Raphael Kang won first singles in straight sets for Nutley's lone win in a 4-1 loss to eighth-seeded Fort Lee in the opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament on May 22 in Fort Lee.
Kenan Tat (second singles), Pablo Arellano (third singles), Jackson Rapavi and Vincent Kang (first doubles) and Russel Van de Zilver and Andrew Syto (second doubles) also competed for Nutley (10-7).
Boys Volleyball
The sixth-seeded Raiders were edged by 11th-seeded West Milford, 25-23, 25-15, in the opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 2 tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Nutley.
Nutley, which concluded its season at 15-8, was led by Gavin Warburton (10 kills, five service points, two digs, one ace), Ilhan Ilhan (five kills, three digs), Evan Petrov (18 assists, one kill, one block, one dig, one service point), Kaan Aydin (three kills, two digs, one assist), Shane Castellanos (five kills, four digs, five service points, two assists, one block, one ace), Saman Hashemi (four service points, one assist, one kill) and Lucas Samaloff (two digs, one assist).
Outdoor Track
The Nutley boys and girls track teams will compete at the NJSIAA Sectional Championships on Friday, May 31-Saturday, June 1 at Warren Hills High in Washington Township. Competition begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
