    MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY

Memorial Day is a national holiday that honors United States military personnel who died in service to our nation. It differs from Veterans Day, a November holiday that honors everyone who ever served in our armed forces.

President Abraham Lincoln, in his 1893 Gettysburg Address, said fallen Civil War soldiers “gave the last full measure of devotion” to the cause of freedom. In the decades since, countless more men and women also made, and still make, that ultimate sacrifice in military service.

Originally called “Decoration Day,” observances originated in Waterloo, a small upstate New York village in Seneca County. A year after the Civil War ended in 1865, Waterloo residents began to pay their respects to local war dead.

Other communities soon began to hold similar tributes to the Civil War’s fallen soldiers, honoring them with prayer services and decorating their graves with flags and flowers.

In 1966, Congress designated Waterloo, NY as “the birthplace” of Decoration Day. In 1971, Congress finally made “Memorial Day” a federal holiday, marked with prayer services, parades and family gatherings.
