PISCATAWAY, NJ – As Piscataway remembers local soldiers who lost their lives in wars and conflicts around the globe Memorial Day weekend, and honors those who have and continue to serve in the country’s military, a retired librarian from the Piscataway Public Library continues to share her passion for history, writing the untold stories of NJ servicemen who lost their lives in a classified attack during World War II.

Kate Baker, who retired last December after many years of service at the library now participates with Stories Behind the Stars, a national research project comprised of volunteers who research the stories of over 421,000 Americans who were killed during the war.

Baker researched and wrote about several New Jersey servicemen who were killed when the transport ship HMT Rohna was sunk by an early model radio-guided missile, killing 1,105 soldiers in the Mediterranean Sea.

“It was the largest loss of life at sea in the history of any US war, but it was classified, left out of the history books and forgotten,” said Baker. “The soldiers' families never knew what happened to them.  All they received was a telegram stating that he was killed and that no other information was available.”

Baker shared what she learned about the attack and how the government classified the attack.
