LITTLE FALLS, NJ - The Township of Little Falls, in collaboration with American Legion Post 108, kicked off the Memorial Day weekend with its annual parade and ceremony on Saturday, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

“Our town has a proud history of service and sacrifice as evidenced by our new banners," Mayor James Damiano said. "Many residents of our town have worn the uniform, stood in harm’s way, and some have not returned. It is our duty to ensure that their memory lives on, not just in our hearts, but in our actions and commitments to the values they fought to defend."

The parade, which began at the American Legion Post in Singac, wound its way down Main Street to Wilmore Road Park. The procession featured classic cars, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, local businesses, and members of the Police and Fire Departments. Various volunteer and community organizations also participated, adding to the spirit of remembrance and community.

Herb Brychta, Commander of American Legion Post 108, led the program, which this year included newly researched historical information discovered through a Township initiative called “Hometown Heroes.” With the help of Commander Brychta and community volunteers, the project aims to identify and honor all of Little Falls' war dead. From World War I to the present, each service member will be remembered with a banner displaying their name and photo, to be prominently placed around town.

“This weekend, as we lay wreaths and raise flags, or enjoy the weather and celebrate, let us all take a moment to reflect on the cost of our freedom and the price paid by so many," Damiano said. "Let us live lives worthy of their sacrifice, and remember the principles of liberty, justice, and unity that they fought to protect."

This year’s parade also saw the introduction of the Little Falls Domestic Violence Prevention Committee (LFDVPC), which partnered with the Girl Scouts for their first-ever float in the Memorial Day parade. The committee's goal is to spread awareness within the community and support survivors. “The collaboration with the Girl Scouts not only supports young women but hopes to empower the next generation,” Dana Piccoli, a representative of the committee said.
