KENILWORTH, NJ – To commemorate the newly renovated Kenilworth Senior Center, a Grand Reopening was held on May 19 along with a special Senior Arts, Crafts and Photography Show. These festivities coincided with the celebration of Older Americans Month, which is observed annually in May.

Mayor Linda Karlovitch came out with her big scissors to officially cut the ribbon along with Councilwoman Toni Giordano-Picerno, Borough Clerk Angela Lazzari, Assistant Finance Officer Lisa Wood, Senior Center Program Director Shirley Boyden Maxwell, Senior Citizens Club Treasurer Paulette Drogon and Union County Commissioner Alexander Mirabella.

The reopening marked the completion of extensive improvements at the senior center that were made possible by a $250,000 Union County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) provided by the HUD CARES Act. Some of the improvements included: replacement of the roof, air-conditioning and heating units, installation of two bottle-filling stations and four air purifiers, and new kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances.

The colorful show featured creations by the following present-day artists: Joan Beviano, Fran Day, Patricia Hubinger, Avi Kiriakatis, Nancy Lamoreaux, Angel Negron and Setta Savaian, as well as works by such former prolific artists as the late Edna Hill, Rita Iannarilli, Arline Melchior and Marga E. Voegele. Also displayed during the show was a late-1800s-style Crazy Quilt, on loan from the Oswald J. Nitschke House museum.

The senior center is located at 526 Boulevard.
