    Former Edison Police Officer Sentenced to 15 Years in State Prison for Vehicular Homicide

    EDISON, NJ - A former Edison Police Officer has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison on two counts of first degree Vehicular Homicide, according to Somerset County Prosecutor's Amitoj Oberoi, age 30, pleaded guilty to these charges in June

    On August 27, 2023, at about 6:22 AM, prosecutors say that Oberoi was traveling on Route 27 while intoxicated. The car crashed, resulting in the death of Carlos Perez-Gaytan, age 24, from Somerset, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, age 20, from North Brunswick. Both of them were passengers in the vehicle driven by Oberoi.

    "The investigation revealed that Amitoj Oberoi was over the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (B.A.C.) limit at the time of the incident," Somerset Prosecutor John McDonald said in a news release.

    Oberoi entered guilty pleas to two counts of first-degree Vehicular Homicide and to a motor vehicle offense for Driving While Intoxicated. He was off-duty at the time of the crash, according to reporting from Tap Into.

    The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor John R. Ascione. The investigation was conducted by the Franklin Township Police Department, including Traffic Safety Unit Officers Ryan Ellington and Andre Tirado, as well as the late Det. Gregory Wilson, members of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team, including Lt. William Pauli (ret.) and Sgt. Christopher Rokicki (ret.), and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, including Det. John Dugan.
