BORDENTOWN, NJ — Normally around 6 p.m., some parents ask their kids questions like ‘Do you want hamburgers or pizza for dinner?’ But on Wednesday, August 14, some parents were instead asking ‘Do you want to go on the slide or play some basketball next?’

And so it goes with National Night Out, the annual event that brings residents, law enforcement agencies, businesses and organizations together to promote “police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie,” according to the event’s website.

Although the event is typically held on the first Tuesday in August, a stormy forecast forced Bordentown event organizers to move the event to the 14th .

Locally, Bordentown Township and Bordentown City combined their National Night Out events roughly five years ago. Bordentown Township Police Lieutenant Frank Nucera told TAPinto Bordentown organizers tried to have more activities for the kids this year.

“Our event has been such a success (in the past) that we had to get more bounce houses and more pretzels,” he said, adding that he hoped to organize a game of kickball between attendees and law enforcement agencies before the night was over.

Other activities within Bordentown's National Night Out at Joseph Lawrence Park for kids included face painting and balloon animal making. There were also free food and beverages for everyone to enjoy.

Several dozen vendor tables, representing a wide range of community businesses and organizations such as banks, health care providers, sports clubs, places of worship and law enforcement agencies were also set up for attendees to visit.

Nucera told TAPinto Bordentown that there were more vendors at this year’s National Night Out than last year’s.

“Word has gotten out about what a great event this is,” he said.
