PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – Step into the newly opened Black Dog Market and Deli, and you’ll immediately be greeted with a smile and a warm “Thank you, have a nice day.” This isn’t just any store; it’s the first commercial venture of local entrepreneur Matthew Amabile, who has transformed the former Cather’s Market on Hudson Street into a welcoming neighborhood spot.

Who is ready for a free sandwich to celebrate this Grand Opening? Black Dog Market and Deli celebrates its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, August 17. At noon, Amabile and his team will give away 100 free sandwiches, inviting the community to experience what this new store offers. You’ll also get a chance to meet Amabile's inspiration for the name, his ten-year-old black lab Bella.

Whether you’re in the mood for a classic Italian, a pastrami, you can be among the first to try them this weekend.

Take a walk up or down Hudson Street. Things will be happening, and the owner, Amabile, will listen to what the locals are looking for to add to the store. From medicine, milk, cleaning products and more, there's a little bit of everything at this renovated market.

But if you are coming with bad energy, you'll leave with good vibes. On our visit to Black Dog Market and Deli, we were smiles. Hello, how is your day? And how can I help you from when we walked into when we left. We asked Amabile about the decor, inspiration, and positivity in his future for the market, and he said simply, “I want to make sure we brighten someone’s day”.

A Vision for Quality and Community

Amabile’s journey from real estate investor to market owner is unconventional but another hopeful story. At just 26, he has made a name for himself in Phillipsburg by revitalizing properties and now aims to bring the same energy to Black Dog Market and Deli. With the guidance of a 40-year deli veteran who was training for the ribbon cutting and launch of the revamped deli, Amabile has ensured his staff is well-trained in the art of sandwich-making, promising quality products, and everyday customer service.

In partnership with The Food Trust , the store also serves as a hub for nutritious food options. Shoppers will find fresh produce, pantry staples, and even information on healthy eating and low-cost food programs. The market accepts various payment methods, including WIC and SNAP benefits, making it accessible to everyone in the community.

New jobs. Absolutely. In addition to Amabile, there are three employees operating the business daily, all of whom live in Phillipsburg.

A Market with Heart and History to “Brighten Someone’s Day”

Amabile’s connection to Phillipsburg runs back to his youth. Though he moved away at a young age, he returned with a vision to revitalize the area. The Black Dog Market and Deli, named in honor of his dog Bella, is a nod to the corner markets of Phillipsburg’s past. With a completely revamped interior, including new flooring, refrigeration, and bright yellow décor chosen by his mother, the market is designed to be a cheerful, welcoming space for all.

“Brighten Someone’s Day” is more than just a motto here; it’s what Amabile aims to achieve for his customers. From the friendly greeting at the door to the potential addition of surfboards to the walls (because, as Amabile says, “They relax people”), every detail is meant to create a positive, relaxing vibe.

    More Than Just a Store

While the market is the focus for now, Amabile has big plans for the future, including renovating the two apartments above the store. For now, he’s listening to his customers and the neighborhood, making sure Black Dog Market and Deli becomes a community spot. He’s entertaining the return of video games to an area in the back.

So, whether you’re looking for a quick snack, some fresh produce, or just a friendly chat, Black Dog Market and Deli may be a new spot to walk on bye, say hi and grab something on the go. For now, be sure to check out the grand opening Saturday!
