EDISON, NJ - All the buildings at Evergreen Meadows Apartment Complex have passed inspection and residents are allowed to move back in, according to Edison Mayor Sam Joshi. 11 out of the 12 buildings were previously deemed unsafe when two ceilings collapsed in the span of one week.

Mayor Sam Joshi says all repairs done to the apartment units were approved by the township. The 280 previously evacuated units are now deemed safe.

“I’m so proud of how Edison handled this. Despite it being a private community, we stepped in to facilitate accommodations and ensure work was done promptly,” Mayor Joshi posted on social media, “I’m proud of us going above and beyond for the safety of Edison residents. All of Edison can rest assured that, in an emergency, we are prepared.”

Mayor Joshi said that “touch up” work still needs to be done, such as painting and spackling. He said there is no longer an “imminent hazard” to residents.

The first ceiling collapsed on Saturday, August 3. A resident was reportedly injured. Township officials arrived at the scene and Code Enforcement issued an unsafe structure notice to Garden Communities Management, who owns and operated the apartment complex.

A second ceiling at the apartment complex collapsed on the morning of Friday, August 9, injuring another resident. The township evaluated the 12 buildings and deemed 11 of them as unsafe. Approximately 280 apartment units were vacated as township officials inspected the property.

The management company agreed to pay for the cost of hotel accommodations and food for those displaced during repairs, according to Joshi.
