WOODLAND PARK, NJ - The Woodland Park Junior Police Academy marked the culmination of a week filled with hard work, camaraderie, and growth as a new cohort of young recruits successfully completed their training on Friday. The academy, dedicated to instilling core principles of discipline, integrity, mental fortitude, and team cohesiveness, equips its participants—all Woodland Park residents aged 10 to 14—with essential life skills while fostering a sense of community responsibility.

This year's curriculum was both diverse and engaging, offering comprehensive instruction in constitutional law, drug enforcement, and construction. The academy's collaboration with various agencies ensured a well-rounded educational experience. Participants benefited from sessions conducted by the Passaic County Bomb Squad, the mountain horse patrol, and CSI Crime Scene Investigation units. Additionally, the local fire department contributed its expertise, enhancing the recruits' understanding of public safety.

Physical training played a crucial role in the program, promoting physical fitness and fostering mental resilience. The rigorous exercises not only built strength but also instilled a sense of perseverance and determination among the young recruits.

“This highlights the importance of perseverance, showing that even when faced with adversity, you shouldn't quit but strive to overcome obstacles,” Lieutenant Daniel Aguilera, the director of the program told TAPinto Passaic Valley. “Key lessons for the kids included respect for themselves, their peers, and their instructors, as well as listening to instructions. We hope the academy instills life lessons like hard work, staying in school, and making good decisions. Building relationships with the community is crucial, as effective policing relies on cooperation between law enforcement and residents."

A highlight of the week was a field trip to MetLife Stadium, where recruits had the unique opportunity to tour the facility and engage with potential recruits. The tour concluded with a presentation on future system improvements aimed at enhancing security protocols for major events. This hands-on experience served as a practical demonstration of the principles taught throughout the academy.

The program included a new addition: a presentation by an officer from the Passaic County Sheriff's Office ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) unit  focused on internet safety, social media use, and protecting children from individuals with malicious intent. This addition was particularly relevant in today's digital age, emphasizing the importance of staying safe online.

"I've realized they [police officers] do a lot more than people think,” Olivia Frago, a 13-year-old participant said. “They undergo a lot of training—six months of it—and we're doing a week of it. It's been really difficult, so the fact that they do it for six months is pretty cool.”

The academy also saw a visit from the NJ State Police, adding an extra layer of excitement and learning for the recruits. This visit highlighted the broader support and recognition the program receives from state law enforcement agencies.
