SOMERS, N.Y. - The 13U Somers Red Storm baseball team capped off their 2024 summer season by winning the Greater Hudson Valley Baseball League Division 2 Championship at Rogers Park in Danbury, CT.

As the #1 seed, Somers had home field advantage against the #2 seeded Fairfield County Captains.

Right out of the gate, Somers’ offense was clicking, recording 13 hits on the day and scoring 10 runs. Braden Valderrama (2 for 3) drove in Somers’ first run on a double in the first inning which was then followed by an RBI single by Liam Colderbanks for a two run first inning. Colderbanks would collect three hits and score three runs on the day.

The Red Storm extended their early lead in the bottom of the second when again Valderrama, Colderbanks and Nicholas Fitts all drove in runs to really put the FC Captains back on their heels, finding themselves down by 5 runs in the 2nd inning.

The offense did not let up. Somers went on to score runs in the next three innings on their way to routing the Captains in a 10-0 victory in 5 innings.

Fitts led the way for Somers, recording 3 hits and 3 RBIs at the plate. Chris Azimi was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Evan Murolo was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, Valderrama was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and and Harry Dugmore was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Defensively, the Red Storm didn’t have to do much. They made the plays when they had to, but starting pitcher Evan Murolo was locked in on the mound delivering a 5 inning complete game shutout. Murolo surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks, and was dominating, striking out 9 batters.

It was an all around full team effort and a well earned GHVBL Division 2 Championship title.  After playing more than 40 games since spring this year and going 29-11-1 during that time, the Red Storm coaches felt it important to note that this team continually got better, believed in themselves and their teammates, and made the choice to move up to a higher division to challenge themselves in this sport that they have worked so hard to improve at.

The boys answered that challenge by playing their best baseball in a higher division to earn that title.

Congratulations Red Storm players and coaches!
