BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Governor Livingston shortstop Zach Geertsma has officially committed to the University of Virginia (UVA), where he will continue his academic and athletic career.

After an impressive summer showcase season, Geertsma fielded multiple Power 4 offers before deciding to join Virginia, a perennial national powerhouse. The UVA Class of 2030 commit will play under Coach Brian O’Connor, who boasts a 20-year tenure with a record of 885-370-2, a national championship in 2015, seven College World Series appearances, and two ACC championships. Under O'Connor's leadership, 102 Cavaliers have been drafted, with 31 making it to the big leagues.

Rising junior Geertsma, a varsity starter since his freshman season, has had two impressive seasons as a Highlander.  Named the starting shortstop his freshman year, Geertsma literally came out of the box swinging, going 2-4 with a pair of RBI in Gov. Livingston’s opening day game against Elizabeth. The quietly confident rookie went on to have a very productive year with a team high .387 average, 24 hits, and 19 runs batted in. After putting up those quality numbers, the freshman started drawing attention within local recruiting circles. This past season, Geertsma took his game to another level, with the most noticeable difference coming in the power department. The maturing 6’1’’ sophomore blasted 21 extra base hits, which included 8 home runs, 5 triples and 8 doubles. The ability to hit the ball with power to all fields has become a signature piece of his approach at the plate. As the Highlanders leadoff man, he had 38 hits, scored 37 and knocked in 29. Additionally, Geertsma proved to be a threat on the basepaths, combining speed and savvy instincts to steal 19 bases. Defensively, Geertsma is equally impressive. At short, he has excellent range and a strong arm, making him a formidable presence in the infield. His all-around performance in Gov. Livingston’s championship run, showcased his leadership and ability to deliver in crucial moments. Geertsma’s outstanding sophomore season did not go unnoticed. Prep Baseball New Jersey named him second team All-State and NJ Atheltics gave him an honorable mention All-State nod. Given the hard working Geertsma all-around skill set and his performance against top showcase talent, it’s no surprise that the veteran UVA coaching staff wanted to lock him down.  With his collegiate home now settled, he can look forward to adding to his Highlander legacy . Geertsma will be the 4
th player Gov. Livingston Coach Roof has sent to the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the past six years. Danny Serretti (UNC), Drew Compton and Steve Reid (Georgia Tech), all had great careers in this tough conference. In the fall of 2026 another Highlander baseball player will have an opportunity to experience that perfect balance of highly competitive athletics and academics.
