SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – Route 22 is scheduled to have overnight lane closures in both directions this coming week as the Dickens Lane to Fairway Drive pavement preservation project on Route 22 nears completion in Union County.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, until 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, the left lane and shoulder are scheduled to be closed on Route 22 westbound just after the Hibachi Steakhouse in Mountainside through Dickens Lane in Scotch Plains. The closures are necessary to complete the application of slurry seal. At least one lane will be maintained during construction.

Next week, from 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and again on Tuesday, Aug. 20 into Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the same times, Route 22 westbound and eastbound will have lane closures to complete the remaining slurry seal application required on the project and to perform repairs on areas that have been damaged.

At least one lane will remain open during construction . Motorists are reminded to use caution, slow down, and avoid driving on or crossing the newly sealed pavement while the lanes are closed.

Over the next few weeks, there will be overnight lane closures from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next, Monday through Friday, on Route 22 eastbound and westbound to install raised pavement markers (RPMs), rumble strips, and to restripe the roadway to complete the project.

The work is part of a $7.3 million federally funded pavement preservation project that is improving approximately 6 miles of Route 22 westbound between Fairway Drive in Union Township and Dickens Lane in Scoth Plains, and about 2.5 miles of Route 22 eastbound between approximately Springfield Ave. in Springfield and Fairway Drive in Union Township. The project is expected to be completed in September 2024.
