    73rd Annual Herb Fair & Market Coming to Caramoor in Katonah

    KATONAH, N.Y. - The 73rd Annual Herb Fair & Market, organized by The New York Unit of the Herb Society of America, will take place on Saturday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Caramoor, Katonah’s renowned culture and arts center.

    For 73 years, the Herb Fair has celebrated the many ways that herbs enrich our lives and promoted the knowledge and use of herbs through educational programs, research, and community engagement. This one-day event will feature an extraordinary roster of makers and artisans as well as an extensive program of presentations and workshops from renowned herbalists, craftspeople, and horticulturalists. We hope you will join us in celebrating 73 years of the Herb Fair's legacy, uniting herb enthusiasts, artisans, and families in a shared appreciation for nature's gifts.

    Highlights of the fair include the following:

    • Marketplace Treasures: Discover a marketplace filled with unique treasures from talented artisans and makers. Find a wide variety of items for the home, garden, and table, as well as herb-infused gourmet foods and wellness products. The impressive lineup of makers includes returning participants Platform, Julia Whitney Barnes, Sage Cacao, The Cozy Tea Cart, Dancing Spirits, Clay Story, Cocoa Tree Chocolates, oHHo, Malfatti Glass, Custodian Studio, Olga Joan, Exalted Alchemy, The Farm at Cabbage Hill, and Bracken Fern Studios as well as exciting new additions including Rajiv Surendra’s pottery, Churchtown Dairy, Sixteen Sisters, The New Savant, Battle Hill Forge, Petaluma Herbals, Arta, Anarchy in a Jar, Saltbox Press, Jane D’Arensbourg, Kokili, C-ThruLens Photography & Fine Art, Bat Flower Press, The Third Room and The Branch Manager.
    • Educational Workshops and Presentations: Engage in hands-on workshops led by renowned herbalists, artists, and horticulturalists.
    • Workshops: These include a fee and have limited spaces available. Tickets can be purchased at Caramoor.org .

    • Julia Whitney Barnes, an artist living in the Hudson Valley who works in a variety of media from cyanotypes, watercolor, oil paintings, ceramic sculptures, murals, and site-specific installations, will lead a workshop on Cyanotype Printing Technique. The workshop costs $127 per person.
    • Laena Mc Carthy, founder of Anarchy in a Jar and author of Jam On: The Craft of Canning Fruit , will lead a fun hands-on class on fruit and herb jam making. The workshop costs $70 per person.

    Presentations: In addition to the workshops, there are hourly free presentations that will take place in the speakers’ tent. Presentations include:

    11 a.m.: Dawn Petter, owner of Petalune Herbals, will discuss how to incorporate culinary herbs and other botanicals into remedies and foods using a wide range of creative methods.

    12 p.m.: Michael Harney, Master Tea Buyer and Blender for Harney & Sons, will share tea traditions, history, and a bit of plant science.

    1 p.m.: Dana Warlock, Founder of Hedgerow Flower Farm + Studio will demonstrate how to utilize the plant material from your garden to make a beautiful flower arrangement.

    2 p.m.: Jean-David Derreumaux, Medicinal Plant Grower for Churchtown Dairy, will discuss Yarrow and its many benefits.

    3 p.m.: D.J. Haverkamp, Beekeeper at Bedford Bee Honeybee Service will share life lessons he's learned from the bees while exploring including flavinoids (the complex chemical compounds found in herbs and honey) in one's diet.

    ●  Caramoor’s Rosen House: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Rosen House at Caramoor is a work of living history. The Mediterranean-style house was built during the period between 1929 and 1939 by Walter Rosen, a Berlin-born, Harvard and New York School of Law-educated international banker specializing in railroads, and Lucie Bigelow Dodge Rosen, an independent, spirited, and highly intelligent member of a prominent New York City family. Enjoy free open house access to the Rosen House on Saturday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., or for $70 per person, indulge in afternoon tea in the Music Room from 2 to 4 p.m. The service includes a variety of tea sandwiches, scones with créme fraiche and preserves, delicious desserts, and a selection of fragrant teas provided by Harney & Sons Fine Teas. Special guest Michael Harney, master tea buyer and blender of Harney & Sons for more than 25 years, will join us for this unique experience, speaking about his experience and discussing the teas the guests will be served.

    • Herb Table: Take in the bountiful herb table featuring a selection of dried and fresh cut herbs, fragrant handmade items such as sachets, lavender wands, and wreaths plus freshly made bouquets. Experts will also be on hand to answer your herb questions!
    • Bake Table: Shop a variety of herb-infused baked goods with an extensive selection of cookies, including cardamom, anise, and apricot sage plus savory cornbreads, tea cakes, muffins, and mini loaves.
    • Lovage Soup: Enjoy the Herb Fair’s signature lovage soup served with focaccia from LMNOP bakery. The savory soup is made with potatoes, leeks, and broth and flavored with lovage, an aromatic herb resembling celery but stronger and sweeter.
    • Enriching Activities: Delight in family-friendly activities, including a children's butterfly craft table hosted by the Rye Arts Center. Butterflies are pollinators and the focus of the Center’s fundraiser “Rye’s Above”, showcasing stunning handpainted butterflies from local artists while raising funds to support local educational programs in the region.
      And finally, Katonah’s iconic neighbor, Martha Stewart, has generously offered an extraordinary auction item, an experience for the ultimate herb enthusiast! As part of the Herb Fair & Market festivities, the highest bidder will win an exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a private tour for a group of 16 through Martha’s stunning personal gardens at her home in Katonah, New York.       Admission to the Fair is free and includes access to the Fair, herbal presentations, and Rosen House tours from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tickets for workshops, afternoon tea, and gourmet boxed lunches can be purchased at Caramoor.org. Caramoor is located at 149 Girdle Ridge Road in Katonah, New York. In the event of rain, the Fair will be held on Sunday, September 15.
