Paterson Designates August 17-23, 2024, as Puerto Rican Heritage Week

PATERSON, NJ - The week of August 17 through August 23 has been designated Puerto Rican Heritage Week to honor and celebrate the vibrant Puerto Rican community in the city.

According to the resolution, Paterson's Puerto Rican community, established in the city since 1940, is recognized for its significant contributions across economic, educational, and cultural spheres. The upcoming Puerto Rican Heritage Week will celebrate this community’s rich history and impact on Paterson.

"I'm very proud to be the sponsor designating the week of August 17 through the 23rd as Puerto Rican Heritage Week, reflecting my maternal heritage,” Councilwoman-at-Large Maritza Davila said. “Although the Puerto Rican flag-raising event is set for Saturday, August 24, due to Councilman Velez's national night out, I'm pleased with the recognition given to Puerto Rican pioneers and the raising of the Puerto Rican flag. I'll continue celebrating until Saturday, as my pride in being Puerto Rican is unwavering."

The week-long celebration will culminate with a Puerto Rican flag-raising ceremony on August 24 at 12:00 p.m. at City Hall. This event will mark the 50th anniversary of the Puerto Rican Parade & Festival of Paterson, Inc., which has been a cornerstone of Puerto Rican heritage celebrations in the city since its founding in 1971.

The resolution acknowledges the Puerto Rican community’s enduring role in Paterson’s development and its contributions to the city’s diverse cultural fabric.
