SHORT HILLS, NJ — Mallika Chatterjee, who will soon begin her freshman year at Millburn High School (MHS), is a talented baker and recently opened a business called Made by Mallika . She donates 10% of the proceeds to a Bangladesh computer lab for young women called Meherun Nessa ITC Computer Lab, named after her grandmother who was born there.

She launched her business on August 19 and has already received six orders. The mouth-watering photos of her delicious baked goods on her website will send her website viewers right to the order page.

Her specialties include layer cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies and cupcakes. They are gourmet but not expensive. "I will have a seasonal menu that will change throughout the year, but I will keep the bestsellers year-round. Please make sure to order at least two days in advance," explained Chatterjee.

She described her inspiration for opening a baking business. “Baking was always one of my hobbies, and whenever we had friends or family over at our house, I would always bake something to share with them.” She continued, “I also enjoy decorating desserts, and making them look fun and appealing. Everyone said they loved what I baked because the desserts were not too sweet, had a nice balance of flavors and were beautifully decorated.”

She mentioned that her friends and family encouraged her to sell her goodies professionally because she loves serving her creations to others.

Chatterjee told TAPinto that she began baking with her grandmother and mom as a young child. Her grandmother passed away in 2017, and she’s very happy to honor her by donating to the nonprofit that bears her name.

She stated that she baked a great deal during the pandemic and honed her skills during that opportunity to practice.

Another favorite hobby Chatterjee enjoys is basketball. She’s going to play for the MHS team this academic year.

Although she hasn’t decided what to major in when she attends college, she has four years to make a choice, it may be science or art. She reported, “I plan on continuing to bake for friends and family even then.”

“I really appreciate all the support that I have gotten from my family while starting this business, and the support of the Millburn community,” Chatterjee noted. Click HERE to see her website.
