Princeton, NJ – Quick: Name the top five rock and roll singers of all time. OK, you could probably name 10. Now look at that list and see how many are women. Could be none. But, consider that list again and you could probably add several women to it.

A group called WomenRock! – made up of six women vocalists and backed by a group of Princeton-area musicians – wants people not to forget the women who have been rocking the musical world for more than 80 years. WomenRock! will perform on the green at Palmer Square Sunday, August 25, at 3 p. m.

Historically, women rock musicians may have taken a back seat to their male counterparts. But that won’t happen on Sunday. The show will include songs from the 1950s to the present and feature hits by artists such as Pink (she performed with her daughter on the final night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night), Tori Amos, Aretha Franklin, Brandi Carlile, Alanis Morissette, Janis Joplin, and many others. The vocalists will be backed by some of the strongest rock musicians currently performing in Princeton-area bands.

The lead vocalists include Stephanie Chin, Eunice Franklin-Baker, Abena Sunshine Glazer, Olive Joseph, Dana Pontani, and Lisa Theodore.

The band members include Jim Brockman (trumpet), Michael Giles (horns), Kathy Haynie (keys, backing vocals), Edward Hermann (guitar, harmonica), Ron Klein (tenor sax), Evan Lerner (alto sax), Laura Manfredi (bass), David Margolis (percussion), John Mazzeo (guitar), and David Ross (percussion).

While you are perusing the events listed below, listen to some background music from one of the lead vocalists from the WomenRock! Ensemble, Stephanie Chin.
