PATERSON, NJ - Summer Street between Essex Street and Park Avenue will be renamed "Frankie Ruiz Way." The resolution, sponsored by Councilman Luis Velez and Councilwoman Maritza Davila, seeks to celebrate Ruiz's significant contributions to music and his connection to Paterson.

Ruiz, born in Paterson to Frank Torresola and Hilda Ruiz, began his musical journey at the age of five, playing percussion instruments at Roberto Clemente Park. His early talent was recognized at a young age, including an award at a performance held at the Majestic Theater in Paterson.

"As someone born and raised in Paterson, I’ve always seen the pride in our community,” Fifth Ward Councilman Luis Velez said. “Back in 2016, we talked about honoring Frankie Reese, but it stalled due to protocol concerns. Now, the family is ready, and we’re moving forward with a celebration on Summer Street between Exits and Park Avenue. We’re making sure Frankie’s legacy lives on, and I’m proud to be part of it."

In his teenage years, Ruiz moved to Puerto Rico, where he rose to prominence as the lead singer of the salsa band La Solucion, which was later renamed Frankie Ruiz y La Solucion. His career continued to flourish as he performed with notable bands such as La Dictadora and La Moderna Vibracion and became the lead vocalist for Tommy Olivencia and his Primerisima Orquesta.

I want to thank Councilman Velez for putting this forth, especially when it comes to honoring our heritage,” Councilwoman-at-Large Maritza Davila said. “Whether through music, education, or other sectors, Patersonians have made a significant impact. While it's important to include the community, we need to remember this is a municipal function. Our city needs love, unity, and respect, and I’m proud to co-sponsor this tribute to Frankie Ruiz."

Ruiz achieved solo success with his album "Solista pero no Solo," which became the best-selling Tropical/Salsa album in the United States in 1986. This album played a key role in popularizing the salsa romantica subgenre.
