STAFFORD - On August 23, 2024, early in the morning, the Stafford Township Police Marine Unit responded to a distress call from the U.S. Coast Guard. A vessel had collided with an intercoastal water marker, resulting in significant damage, flooding, and injuries to one person on board.

Sgt. Christopher Smith and Patrolman Justin Barbuto, members of the Marine Unit, were the first responders to arrive at the scene. They located the damaged vessel, which had been beached to prevent sinking, and safely rescued both occupants. The U.S. Coast Guard from Barnegat Light provided immediate medical attention to the injured individual, who was then transported to a nearby boatyard for further treatment. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening.
