NEW JERSEY -- Dozens of New Jerseyans have been infected with Salmonella bacteria contracted from cucumbers, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA.)  The agency noted that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) determined that the active outbreak concluded as of August 22, 2024.

During the outbreak, however, between 20 and 25 New Jersey residents contracted Salmonella. Across the country 551 individuals contracted the illness in 34 states.

The FDA says that symptoms of Salmonella contraction usually occur within 12 to 72 days of consuming contaminated food with symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps lasting four to seven days. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections, the leading government health agency added.

During the investigation of the nationwide outbreak, laboratory, epidemiological, and trace-back data determined that cucumbers from Bedner Growers, Inc., of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Thomas Produce Company, of Boca Raton, Florida, were likely two of the sources, but not necessarily all, of illnesses in this outbreak.

The FDA says that there is currently no product from these farms on the market , adding that there is likely no ongoing risk to the public.
