Website Says Westfield is One of Nation’s ‘Safest and Richest’ Towns

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield is one of the top 10 places in the United States when it comes to being a safe place for people with good incomes, according to a personal finance advice website.

The website, GOBankingRates.com, ranked Westfield as ninth in the country in its analysis titled “The 30 Safest and Richest US Cities to Live in 2024.”

Right at the top of its article, the site acknowledged that many of the top 30 sites on its list are beyond the means of many Americans.

“When choosing where to live in the U.S., budget-friendliness may not be the most important factor,” it said. “Perhaps you have the financial privilege of choice and are looking to live in a city that ranks high in safety and holds a tremendous amount of wealth between its residents.”

The site said Westfield’s “average median” household income of $281,738 and violent crime rate of 0.16 resulted in its high ranking on the list. Coming in at the top of the heap was Wester Springs in Illinois, a town of only 13,557 with a similar “average median” household income but a violent crime rate of zero.

One notch better than Westfield, according to GOBankingRates.com is Wellesley, Mass. There, the 29,862 residents enjoy an “average median” household income of 367,801 and a violent crime rate of 0.61

In an email, GOBankingRates.com Media Outreach Manager Ray Marek said income and crime were not the only factors that went into the listicle. He said the company “analyzed a variety of safety and wealth-related metrics including: median incomes, average home values, violent crime rates, property crime rates and livability.”

The story said Westfield has a population of 30,839, with 4,458 residents being 65 years old or older. It says the average single-family home is worth $1.18 million and the average monthly mortgage cost is $6,925.

Westfield’s total annual cost of living came in at $111,730.

“Safety is a top priority for families when choosing where to live, but it doesn't come cheap,” said Marek. “In fact, many of America's safest towns have median incomes as high as $300-$400K.”
