PATERSON, NJ - A Better Market , Paterson's first healthy corner store, is officially open at 215 Rosa Parks Blvd. This new local business is dedicated to providing fresh, locally sourced produce and goods, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and supporting local farmers and small businesses.

The vision for A Better Market was brought to life by Shana Manradge, a lifelong Paterson resident with over 20 years of experience in the medical field. Inspired by her personal experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, Manradge recognized the need for affordable, quality food in her own community.

"I always say great things come out of the Fourth Ward, no matter what people say," Fourth Ward Councilwoman Ruby Cotton said. "Shana, I remember visiting your house when you said you were going to do something, but you didn’t say what, and now, here you are with A Better Market. I tell everyone to come to this corner because it's better than the supermarket—fresher and cheaper. Being right across from Deacon Davis, you've both done so much for the community. I congratulate you, and I’m proud to be the Councilwoman for the Fourth Ward where you chose to open this business. You stayed on course despite the challenges, and God guided your path."

In Paterson, food insecurity is a pressing issue, affecting many families who go to bed unsure where their next meal will come from. The city struggles with food deserts—areas where access to affordable, nutritious food is severely limited or nonexistent. Local convenience stores often offer processed foods and sugary drinks, leaving residents with few healthy options. A Better Market is tackling these challenges head-on by providing fresh, locally-sourced produce at affordable prices community.

"Today marks a significant milestone in my journey to revolutionize how our community accesses fresh, affordable products," Manradge said. "I am thrilled to announce that I am the owner of A Better Market, Paterson’s first Healthy Corner Store. What started as a 'crazy idea' during the pandemic has grown into a reality. The community inspired me to create something that prioritizes health, sustainability, and affordability, and now, with the launch of our new mobile unit, A Better Market will soon be able to reach all corners of the city."

"I thank God for opening the doors for us to come together for better food, better health, and a better future," Decaon Davis of the Green Acre Community Garden, which happens to be across the street from A Better Market, said. "It's not just about us, but about our children—the future. We need to support them, teach them about nourishment, and turn things around for the better. Let's come together as a community, honoring God, and make this movement stronger."

Beyond affordability, A Better Market emphasizes health and sustainability. The store aims to minimize waste by chopping and freezing produce that is nearing expiration and collaborating with the Green Acres Community Garden for composting. Seeds from produce are saved and shared with the garden to support sustainable practices.

Pricing at A Better Market is designed to be more affordable than larger supermarkets. For example, a bag of carrots that costs $5 at ShopRite might be priced at $2.50 or $3 at A Better Market. The store is also focused on offering lower meat prices, with chicken thighs priced significantly less than at big retailers.

A Better Market is designed to be more than just a store; it aims to be a gathering place for the community. The open layout will allow for cooking demonstrations, nutrition classes, empowerment workshops, voter registration drives, and community meetings.

"[A] Better Market couldn’t have come at a better time, especially after we just cut the ribbon on Mr. G’s ," Mayor Andre Sayegh said. "We all need healthy alternatives, and while we support Mr. G’s, I want to highlight Shawna Mandridge and her journey. It’s been a long road, but today, the sun is shining on you and your commitment to quality and excellence. I admire your persistence, and I'm grateful to be here to cut the ribbon with you. Congratulations, Shana, and thank you for being a health hero in our community."

Despite the challenges of introducing a healthy corner store to the Fourth Ward neighborhood, Manradge remains optimistic. Efforts are being made to engage the community and educate residents on the benefits of healthy eating. Focus groups are being organized to better understand local needs and preferences. Manradge believes that as the community recognizes A Better Market’s commitment to their well-being, the store will thrive.

In addition to the storefront, A Better Market announced plans to introduce a mobile unit, which will bring fresh produce and affordable, quality products to all areas of Paterson. Although the mobile unit isn't ready to hit the streets yet, updates will be shared when it is ready to serve the entire city.

"This hasn't just been about opening a store; it's about starting a movement toward healthier living, supporting local farmers, and giving our community access to fresh, affordable food," Manradge said. "Despite setbacks, I never gave up, and neither did you. Today, we open our doors, but this is just the beginning. I invite you to join me in making A Better Market part of our community, one that values health, sustainability, and a brighter future for all of us. Here's to a better future with A Better Market."

    A Better Market is open Monday-Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
