RED BANK, NJ: Starting in September 2024, the Shrewsbury River Waterway navigational channel will undergo periodic closures as construction ramps up for the replacement of the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge (S-32) on Rumson Road (County Route 520).
The closure period will last until May 2025 and is part of the extensive effort to replace the aging bridge that connects the Borough of Rumson to the Borough of Sea Bright, New Jersey.
The new bridge is expected to open to vehicles and pedestrians in 2025, marking a significant milestone in this vital infrastructure upgrade.
Following the opening, the existing bridge will be carefully demolished. During this phase, the access trestles on the south side will be removed, and temporary access trestles will be installed on the north side to facilitate the bridge’s removal.
As the project progresses, additional updates will be provided to keep mariners, boaters, and the public informed about any changes in waterway access and construction activities.

Mariners and residents are encouraged to stay updated throughout the construction to minimize disruptions and ensure safe passage through the Shrewsbury River Waterway during this critical infrastructure improvement.
In September 2024, the Contractor will begin installation of the new drawbridge spans. This work requires temporary full and partial closures of the navigational channel.
The existing bridge roadway will continue to be open to vehicles and pedestrians. During full channel closures, a barge will be blocking the channel, and it will be closed to all marine vessels from 6:00 A.M. Monday through 6:00 P.M. Friday. There will be no bridge openings in this period.
During partial closures, the channel width will be reduced by half, from 75 feet to 37.5 feet, as bridge work occurs on either side of the river. The bridge operator will instruct vessels, as is currently done, when there are scheduled bridge openings during partial closure periods. The anticipated channel closure schedule is as follows:
