SAYREVILLE, NJ -- The football season for Sayreville War Memorial High School is starting soon, with their first game being a home-opener against Colonia on Thursday, Aug. 29. First-year head coach Mark Poore will look to build off the success of last year's 8-3 season, which also featured a Sectional Seminfinals appearance.

Poore noted that 13 seniors had graduated from last year's team. Most notably was running back Zaimer Wright, who had just over 2000 all-purpose yards (1743 rushing and 259 receiving) and 24 total touchdowns in his final season as a Bomber.

However, Poore did mention some returning seniors who should make an impact this season, including starting quarterback Nick Nunez, offensive linemen Bryce Bouchard and Preston Ditzel, and position players Kishore Sadowski and Devin Krass. Bouchard, Ditzel, Nunez, and Krass have all been named team captains this year, along with fellow senior Dariel Jerez.

"We are very junior-heavy on both sides of the ball," said Poore. "We need to grow up quickly. What we lack in experience we make up for in athleticism. The faster this team can grow up, the better we will be."

Some juniors to be on the lookout for are Shaun Jackson, Joe Curbello, Chase Barnes, Connor McKevitt, Brian Zangrillo, Demitri DeSario, Adrian Ciesla, and Ryan Sanfiorenzo.

What coach Poore is most excited about this season is his first game as head coach of the Bombers. He is also looking forward to Sayreville's Oct. 4 home game against Piscataway, a team coach Poore has a lot of respect for.

"Piscataway is always a big game for Sayreville," Poore added. "Those were some of the best games I ever played or coached in. I have a lot of respect for their program and what they have accomplished. It is a special week for us and a rivalry that goes back 20+ years. It is always a special moment for our players to experience, and I hope they can take it all in and enjoy it."

"I am so excited to be the head coach of the team that I played for," said Poore. "It really is an honor, and I am so excited to look up into the stands and see our fans cheering for us."
