NUTLEY, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) monitor Jeanette Makus overrode a vote made by the Nutley Board of Education in what she described as being in the best interest of the students.

The issue in question was a payment of $27,957.71 for unused vacation time for an employee of the district.

When it came time for the BOE to vote on item J, Salvatore Ferraro and Joseph Battaglia abstained from voting. The other members of the BOE voted no. Item J reads:

    J. APPROVAL OF UNUSED VACATION DAYS BE IT RESOLVED that the Nutley Board of Education approves the payment of unused vacation days to Employee ID # 4205 in the amount of $27,957.71, as per contract.

After the vote, Makus spoke and explained that she would override the BOE vote, citing the legal expenses associated with denying the payment. As state monitor, Makus has the ability to override all decisions in the best interest of the students, district, and ultimately the taxpayers.

TAPinto Nutey education reporter Alley Shubert will have more details about the August 26 Nutley BOE meeting later in the week.
