BORDENTOWN CITY, NJ — While local animal rescue Bordentown City Cats (BCC) is known for finding homes for adoptable cats and kittens, the group is asking for the public's help with a special case in which volunteers say cats are in danger of losing their lives.

BCC's Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program has been working for several years to trap and neuter feral cats in a Bordentown Township neighborhood in which residents have been feeding and looking after the kitties. However, the family who primarily has been caring for the cats has lost their home, and the financial institution that now owns the property has demanded that the animals be removed from the land and taken to an animal shelter, where they will most likely be euthanized as they are feral and not socialized to be pets.

A representative of BCC says that the group's volunteers are "heartbroken over the potential loss of these community cats," as many of the kitties have already been neutered or spayed, are being cared for by the organization's local volunteers and even have names. In fact, many of BCC's adopted kittens and cats have been a product of this colony, and BCC has been able to spay and release colony cats who have given birth in their care.

While one of the caretakers in the neighborhood has taken responsibility for caring for seven of the cats, 14 are still in danger. BCC is currently looking for barns, farms or garden centers who are willing to accept feral "working" cats — without these types of locations, many of the cats will most likely lose their lives.

BCC is proposing to work with Bordentown Township and its Animal Control Officer to trap the cats, neuter and spay those who have not yet been altered, vaccinate and microchip them before placing them at a barn, farm or garden center. Potential caretakers at these locations would agree to provide adequate shelter, food and veterinary care as needed for the cats to live their lives on the property as outdoor working cats — while the kitties will not make good pets, they still deserve a place to live out their lives with protection.

BCC points to words from one of the organization's founding members, Mary Anne Keifer, also known as "MAK", who was known to remind volunteers to "honor the nature of the feral" — not all cats were made to live indoors as pets but deserve to live safely outdoors in the wild.

Local farms, barns, garden centers or any other entity that may be interested in helping to re-home these community cats should reach out as soon as possible to Btowncitycats@gmail.com for more information.
