The Somers Record caught up with Tiana to learn more about her inspirations, the college recruiting process, and her advice for younger athletes looking to follow in her footsteps.

How did you first get started playing soccer? What do you enjoy the most about the game?

My sister Tori and I grew up watching our older cousins, Melissa and Stephanie Righetti play soccer. We watched them win states in 2014. In addition, I always played with my sister. She always challenged me and made me feel like I should never give up, and always work on getting better.

What has the team been doing over the summer to prepare?

Summer league, and there have also been practices once a week.

How do you value being a leader on the team?

I believe we lead through example. A positive attitude and a good work ethic on and off the field is very important.

Who has been your biggest role model over the years? What have you learned from them?

My dad, he taught me that we learn more from the mistakes that we make than our successes.

What is your favorite memory so far from your athletic career at Somers?

Playing with my older sister Tori. I was a freshman, and she was a senior. I had the opportunity to play alongside her in the midfield.

Your recently committed to play Division 1 soccer at UConn. Tell us more about the recruitment process and how you arrived at your decision.

After speaking to multiple schools and receiving several offers I truly felt valued by UConn and felt they were a great fit for me. The coaches love the sport, team, school, and their jobs. I knew right away this was the school for me once I visited it. The coaches at UConn were amazing. They were the only coaches that I felt a strong mutual connection to.

What is one thing about you that not many people may know?

I know how to make homemade pasta. I make it every Christmas Eve when we host for my family.

What is your favorite music to listen to while warming up for game?

Any music that is upbeat. It depends on what mood I’m in.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Somers?

    My home, by the pool

For a young athlete growing up in Somers, what would you tell them about the experience of being a part of the soccer program and why they should go out for the team?

You will make great friendships on and off the field. We spend lots of time together. Lots of laughter and a few upsets. It brings the team closer.
