Focused Glen Rock Boys Soccer Team Is Ready For Season

GLEN ROCK, NJ - The start of the regular season is just about to happen and that’s just fine with a well-prepared, highly focused Glen Rock High School boys soccer team.
The Panthers are scheduled to begin the season with a road match at New Milford on Wednesday, September 4. On September 7, they are slated to host Bergenfield.
“Our goals for the season are to win the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC) Colonial Division,’’ Glen Rock head coach Matt Beverin said. “[We also want to] make the Bergen County Tournament and make a deep run/win it.
“[Another goal is to] win the North 1 Group 2 Sectional Championship and win the Group 2 State Championship.’’
Key returning varsity experienced student athletes for the Panthers include Alex Kim (senior, defender and midfielder), Zach Silberstein (senior, midfielder and defender), Harrison Wortley (senior, forward), Josh Pak (senior, defender), Porter Beaudoin (senior, defender), Jacob Sasunov (junior, midfielder), Drew Carlin (junior, midfielder), Gavin Quigley (junior, midfielder), Owen Main (junior, forward) and Matt Heenan (sophomore, midfielder).
Jacob Grinberg (junior, forward) is a promising newcomer to the team.
“Alex Kim, Harrison Wortley and Zach Silberstein are the longest tenured varsity players so naturally I look to them to lead the group both on and off the field,’’ Beverin said. “They know the expectations and standards we want to keep as a program.
“Each of them brings something different to the team, and I’m excited to see them in their senior seasons leading the team in chasing our goals. While those three are the most experienced, the majority of this group will have been varsity players for multiple years and know the expectations that come with being a Glen Rock varsity soccer player.’’
Glen Rock tallied another winning record in 2023 (10-5-1), with a mark of 8-1-1 in the NJIC Colonial Division.
They advanced to the NJSIAA North 1 Group 2 Sectional Tournament where they lost a 2-1 match to Indian Hills last year.
This year, the Panthers compete in the Colonial Division along with Eastern Christian, Butler, Hawthorne Christian, Hawthorne and Pompton Lakes.
“I firmly believe we are contenders to win our Division this year,’’ Beverin said. “We have been competing for the Division championship each of my first three years and only gaining a share of that [Division championship] two years ago. We are looking to win the Division outright this coming season. Our biggest rival in my tenure has been Pompton Lakes. They have won or had a share of the Division title each of the last three years, so they would have to be at the top of the list.
“Having said that, each team within the Division can present a difficult matchup on a given day as we’ve seen in previous years. It’s extremely important to go into each game with the right mindset and play the right way. If we are doing our job and playing our style of soccer, we feel confident in our ability to achieve our goals.’’
