UNION, NJ – For the thirty-third year, Union residents and visitors celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day with a Flag Raising ceremony in front of Town Hall on Sunday afternoon.

“This year marks the thirty-third anniversary of the renewal of Ukraine’s independence,” said Roman Myhal, President of the local chapter of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.  “This is indeed an honor to raise the Ukrainian flag alongside the American flag.  We realize the importance of keeping the idea and fact of Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty at the forefront of everybody’s mind.  That is why we keep working to keep this tradition alive.”

“It’s important we keep this tradition of making sure we don’t forget,” said State Senator Joe Cryan.  “Ukraine is fighting for democracy, fighting for the right to be free.  That’s why today is so important; keeping the message alive, understanding what’s at stake.”

“It’s so important that we stand in solidarity with all of you,” said Union Mayor Manuel Figueiredo.  “On behalf of the Township Committee and all of our residents, I’m honored to be here today to raise this beautiful Ukrainian flag.  It’s a powerful symbol of the land’s beauty and the people’s deep-rooted connection to their homeland.  It embodies hope, freedom, and the unwavering pursuit of democracy and justice, inspiring us all.”
